Let us begin with this sentence: “The Analyst cannot do good, yet he or she understands it.”

The content and echoes of this sentence are those of a well-known traditional moral language. I posit that it expresses an essential part of Freud’s core discoveries.

I am stating something obvious, provided we are aware of it: let us recall that one of Freud’s observations is that in mental disorders the most simple ability to observe fails, that which is in plain view for all to see (child sexuality, for example); or even, the ability to call things by their name is lacking (despite the observation-speaking nexus being known).
